Outdoor Activities in Suffolk

The time of year, rain or shine shouldn’t hamper your enjoyment of the countryside and the fun activities you can participate in whether you’re newcomer to Suffolk or a resident. With lots of

There are the more traditional countryside pursuits to try out as well as more modern activities such as paintballing and swinging through trees.

Many will agree with the sentiment that nothing beats a bit of fishing. In Suffolk there are numerous places you can visit to settle down and see what you can catch whether you’re a pro or a novice fisherman. Bungay Cherry Tree Angling Club is very popular, offering day and week tickets and High Lodge has two lakes you can fish from both of which allow for a range of techniques. Be sure to test out the waters at Weybread Carp Fishery - a two and a half acre private lake ideal for a day’s fishing, and Stonham Barns Fishery where the lakes are home to carp, tench and bream. With a shop on site selling tackle and bait for the fish and snacks for hungry fisherfolk to eat - what could be better? Larkwood Trout Fishery has a record catch of a fish weighing 16lbs 10oz - see if you can better it!

Horse Riding

A beloved and fun pastime, horse riding is a popular activity in Suffolk and a great way to see the beautiful countryside. North Manor Equestrian Centre just outside of Halesworth offer tuition for most ages and abilities. Tunstall Forest Livery conveniently sits on the doorstep of Tunstall Forest and welcomes novice horse riders as well as those who are more experienced.

You might get a chance for horse riding on the beach with Poplar Park Equestrian Centre - weather permitting of course, and there is always heathland and forest to ride through as well.

Try out horse riding with Valley Farm Equestrian Leisure and take a breather at the onsite Camargue Cafe afterwards. Meet the beautiful horses at Eye Equestrian Centre, again - ideally suited for beginners and experienced riders alike. With more than 40 horses at Twinstead Riding School you’re bound to find the horse that’s right for you and the School caters for all abilities.

Clay Pigeon Shooting

Try your hand at clay pigeon shooting at High Lodge where the friendly team of professionals can help you master the skill. There’s also The Big Shoot in Darsham where anyone over the age of 9 can get tuition and have a blast at the same time. Lessons at Suffolk Shooting School typically last an hour and clays, cartridges and tuition are all included - a great venue to receive induction into the sport.

If splashing about in a boat is more your style, we’ve got you covered. You can hire a range of vessels at Thorpeness Meare, such as rowing boats, dinghies, punts and canoes, which are great for solo sailing as well as family fun. Iken Canoe Hire offers services on the River Alde, and Outney Meadow Canoe Hire gets you on the River Waveney - with both rivers offering lovely views and the chance to get closer to the local wildlife. For sailing look no further than Pin Mill Sailing Club and Alton Water Sports Centre where you can have all kinds of aquatic fun. If you’re after something that gets your blood pumping, Bawdsey Quay Watersports Centre has a range of activities on offer such as powerboating and raft building although you can choose a more leisurely cruise down to a nearby pub if you prefer.

Outdoor Extremes

Differing from your typical countryside pursuits - go wild at Go Ape! in Thetford where you embark on a treetop adventure. With zip wires, ladders and swings, unleash your inner Tarzan in a Go Ape! session. If you find the treetops just aren’t high enough, take a tour of Suffolk with Wizard Balloons which fly from Eye and Bury St Edmunds. Of course, some people might prefer their extremes a little bit closer to earth so be sure to visit the Suffolk Ski Slope in Ipswich, offering skiing, tobogganing and a climbing wall. There’s also Floridaz Hover Crafts one of a handful of hovercraft experiences in the UK, and East Suffolk Water Ski Club where you can cruise along the River Deben in style.

Of course, our list wouldn't be complete without mentioning paintballing - and you’re spoilt for choice in Suffolk with where to go. In Ufford you can try out Skirmish Paintball with six thrilling areas to play. Desert Storm Paintballing features a mock village where you can unleash hell (in paint form) on your family and friends. Catering for groups and individuals, Gunsmoke Paintball ensures a wild time for all. Paintball Underworld in Long Melford offers unlimited ammo for a fixed price. Last but in no way least, Combat Paintball is a film set themed course where you play amongst dinosaurs, zombies, helicopters and more! If paintballing sounds fun but you’re hankering for some added fun - pop over to Suffolk Moto Park where you can throw yourself into 4x4 driving, dirt karts, clay pigeon shooting and more.
