  • About Beccles & Bungay

An area of quiet roads, rivers and painterly countryside, best explored by bike, foot or canoe

At the southernmost point of the Broads, the river at Beccles is alive with yachts and pleasure boats; the town of Beccles a haven for shoppers and sightseers exploring the wonderful historic buildings, local shops, delicatessens, cafes and restaurants.

Beccles has many fine historic buildings including the 14th century church of St Michaels, its’ fascinating detached 100 ft belfry tower with clocks on its south, east and north facades. A visit to the museum situated within the 16th Century Leman House is a must.

Bungay is a sleepy market town straddling the Waveney; its famous octagonal domed Butter Cross at its centre; its Norman castle a contemporary of Framlingham Castle. Theatre and film lovers will adore the recently renovated Fisher Theatre.

The Suffolk coast is much loved for its fantastic choice of local shops, Beccles is famous for its clock makers, Bungay for its artisan and antique shops. Despite the recession there are still eight pubs in this tiny town, each offering samples of local ales.
